Every single person believes something about the universe, life, meaning, purpose, and identity. For some, that belief may be that everything is random. For others it may be that everything is simply organic or evolving. For others they may believe in a “power” – a number of people say things like “the universe will have its way.”

Others may believe in the God of the Bible who has plans and purposes for the universe and its people.

Our beliefs inform how we view everything. I have had spinal problems for over thirty years. I remember a conversation with a doctor who said: “You should not be surprised at your condition, Brian, because we were not designed to walk upright!” I’m not sure that the beliefs that my doctor held, gave him sufficient motivation to explore a healing process.

What we believe affects every single moment of our earthly lives and eternity. Our belief governs our choices, interprets all the events of our lives and the circumstances around us. Our beliefs determine our security, our joy, our ability to grieve, how we view others and relate with them and so much more.

Beliefs inform the way we think, the way we feel and the way we act. It’s interesting how, in contemporary society, we seem to have reversed the order of many things – feelings have become the major determinant of our thinking and actions. Whilst we are created to be people with strong desires, our desires need to be led by our belief.

For the next few weeks, we will explore the importance of belief and how belief in the God of Hope causes us to abound in hope.
